La Aldea: a territory that defies description?
The municipality of La Aldea de San Nicolás is a large natural area occupying a substantial proportion of the western part of the island of Gran Canaria. Essentially it extends over part of the Arco del Andén Verde, the basin of La Caldera, the Tirma-Azaenegue, Inagua and Guguy massifs and the slopes and ravines in the southwest.
This splendid setting is the result of a long and fascinating volcanic process, combined with meteorological factors. So after approximately 14 million years of eruptions and changes of climate we are presented with a veritable open-air museum displaying a spectacular variety of materials and geological formations.
That substructure, both emerged and submerged, has been constantly colonised by countless living beings, acting out an enthralling story which is worth getting to know.
